The Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) is an autonomous body established by the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare of the Indian government.
The Food Safety and Standards Act of 2006 established it with the primary purpose of promoting food cleanliness and safety in India.

Who issues food license?
The Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI), under the Ministry of Family Health and Welfare, issues FSSAI licences.
Turnover Based
Basic FSSAI registration is required for food businesses with a revenue of up to 12 lacs. If your turnover is between 12 lacs and 2 crores, you’ll require a state licence. To learn more, continue reading.

The FSSAI registration or food licence is based on the locality. If a food business has many sites, it is necessary to obtain numerous FSSAI permits.
State & Central Level Category
FSSAI licences are divided into two categories: state-level licences and central-level food licences. Small and medium-sized FBOs must have a state licence, whereas large-scale FBOs must have a central licence.
Validity & Renewal
The FSSAI licence is only valid for a certain amount of time, usually 1 to 5 years. Before the term expires, the individual must apply for FSSAI Renewal.
Who is liable for FSSAI registration?
Under the Food Safety and Standards Act of 2006, a petty food manufacturer must apply for registration or renewal of registration. The following are the requirements to meet the criteria of a petty food manufacturer:
- Except caterers and temporary stall holders, sells or makes any product of food himself or as a tiny retailer, hawker, or itinerant vendor or distributes foods at any religious or social gathering
- The average yearly turnover is less than 12 lacs and/or the average yearly turnover is less than 12 lacs.
- FBO is a manufacturing or processing company.
- Food production capacity (excluding meat and meat products, milk and milk products) is limited to 100 kg/ltr per day.
- Procurement, handling, and collection of milk up to 500 litres per day or 2.5 metric tonnes of solid milk each year
- Animals can be slaughtered at a rate of two large animals, ten small animals, or 50 poultry birds each day.

FSSAI has introduced an online application that is named as ‘Food Licensing and Registration System’ or FLRS. FLRS is introduced for the food business entities to apply online for the FSSAI license.
