Overview - TAN
All persons who are responsible for collecting tax at source (TCS) or deducting tax at source in India are given a 10-digit alphanumeric number by the Income Tax Department of the Central Government (TDS). This is a one-of-a-kind number known as the TAN. The TAN number is required to be quoted on all TDS returns filed under Section 203A of the IT Act of 1961.
Tax Deduction and Collection Account Number (TAN) is an abbreviation that stands for Tax Deduction and Collection Account Number.
Under Indian law, this number is an important aspect of the tax compliance system.
ABOUT TAN REGISTRATION
The Tax Deduction and Collection Account Number is a 10-character alphanumeric code that must be used by everyone who is obligated to deduct tax at source or TDS.
Who issues TAN card?
The Income Tax Department has assigned this authority to NSDL, which issues the TAN card on behalf of the IT department and under the supervision of the CBDT.
Who can apply?
Anyone who is required to deduct TDS and file a TDS return, whether an individual or a corporate entity, must apply for a TAN.
Validity of TAN card
Unless you surrender it to the tax authorities for some reason, your TAN number is valid for life. The TAN is generated once and does not need to be renewed.
How to apply for TAN?
Those who need a TAN number must complete out Form 49B, which is a TAN application form.
Authenticity of the TAN Card
The Government maintains an online platform called “Know Your TAN,” where anyone may quickly verify and certify the validity of their TAN number.
BENEFITS OF TAN NUMBER
The whole address and PIN code of the deductee are auto-populated while filing TDS returns using TAN, as specified by the Income Tax Department. Transparency in taxation is ensured as a result of this.
When completing a TDS return with TAN, the status of the booking is also recorded. This allows the deductor to check whether his return matches the TDS statement he filed.
TAN can be used to generate payment challans and TDS/TCS certificates in addition to completing TDS returns.
Different branches of a corporation can apply for a TAN online for a unique TAN for each branch or division.
